From September 2016 until the end of April 2017, the German air force was engaged in protecting the airspace over the Baltic States, alongside the air forces of France and the Netherlands which had taken over the lead role, operating from Siauliai in Lithuania. In two back-to-back deployments of each four months, the 74 Tactical Wing from Neuburg and the 71 Tactical Wing Richthofen based in Wittmund brought up to six Eurofighters to the mission, which represented the ninth time the German air force participated in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission. It was the fourth time the German units made use of the Estonian air base at Ämari.
The Dutch air force passed on the lead role to Poland. Spain will take over from Germany.
